Casino
A casino is a structure that houses several gambling games of chance. The casino itself may be a stand-alone facility normally situated near or actually part of dining establishments, cruise ships or more commonly, hotels.
The following are some of the more popular games found in a casino: • Baccarat • Blackjack • Craps • Keno • Roulette • Slot machines Some casinos also have Poker and Bingo social rooms.
The term casino originally implied a small structure like lodges, cabins, chalets, villas, and the like that was built or designed for fun. In the 19th century, the term later on included other enjoyable activities which included sports and gambling. Eventually, it just implied gambling facilities.
In most countries, gambling is only allowed by people who are at least 21 years old. In other countries, they allow gambling for people who are at least 18 years old. In most states in the United States however, you have to be at least 21.
There are over a thousand casino establishments around the United States. Nevada has the largest number of casinos in the United States. This is followed by California, Washington State and then Florida. The more popular ones are found in Las Vegas, Reno and Atlantic City. Elsewhere abroad, you also have popular locales in Monte Carlo (found in Monaco - a small French-speaking country situated in the French Riviera), Macau (one of two specially administered regions of China), Costa Rica, France, Germany and Panama.
Las Vegas easily is the most popular gambling place in the world. Its roots came from the vision of one of the more popular gangsters in U.S. history: Benjamin "Bugsy" Siegel. Using his own "dirty" money and funded partially by the mob gang that he belonged to, he authored the construction of the Flamingo - the only hotel casino (at that time) located in the desert of Las Vegas. It was a structure he wanted built for his girlfriend, Virginia Hill. The building was completed although it was plagued by cost overruns (mainly because his girlfriend was siphoning money from the construction) and Siegel oversold shares of stock in the casino. The opening was a disaster as reception was lackluster although this began the slow but steady rise of Las Vegas. Siegel's story was immortalized through film and TV. There were several versions about aspects in his life but the most popular one (and one that depicts the Flamingo) is the film "Bugsy" starring Warren Beatty and Annette Bening in the lead roles.
Casinos are generally expensive to construct and maintain. This is considering the cost of the equipment, let alone the cost of the hotel facility. Further, the people who run the casinos are also expensive to hire or train. However, the monetary gains from operating the casino are more than enough to compensate for these expenses. This is because no matter what the game in the casino is, the facility maintains what is commonly called the house edge. This means that the odds of a player winning consistently in casino games is so low that casino owners almost always earn a tidy profit. It is a very profitable venture that when casino owners want a change in the look of their facility, they do not simply remodel the establishment but sometimes, the entire building is demolished.
